The National Blood Transfusion Service ((NBTS) has said that the blood bank is once again low in its blood supply and is calling on donors to come forward to boost its current stock.According to National Blood Donor Manager of the NBTS, Shameeza Mangal, this kind of shortage is normal around this time of the year, as it is the Christmas season, and persons tend to have a ‘laid-back’ attitude when it comes to voluntarily donating blood. However Mangal explained that, due to the reports carried in sections of the media that the NBTS discards blood, persons have restrained themselves from donating since they are of the belief that their blood would also go to waste.“Now when we are calling up persons and asking them to donate, people saying: ‘I hope y’all ain’t gon throw away my blood…’ So we are having a difficult time in getting persons to come forward,Soccer Jerseys Outlet,” Mangal told Kaieteur News yesterday. She noted that the blood bank has now taken up the task of explaining to persons exactly what ‘discarding’ blood means, as she noted that the only way the bank would discard blood is when its shelf life comes to an end or if the blood has any infection or disease. Now that the NBTS has recognised that it is the Christmas season, the bank has once again embarked on its ‘call back’ programme where recruiters would contact previous voluntary donors and asked them to donate blood.According to Mangal, this programme is not effective as only a few persons have actually responded to the calls. Others committed to donating did not turn up.She noted that most persons have promised to donate after the holidays, but she pointed out that this is also the season where a number of accidents take place, and it is a known fact that persons would be in need of blood, and as such the blood bank needs to ensure that enough blood is available. She added that it is the season for sharing and giving, and that persons should use the opportunity to give blood and save someone’s life.Only recently the Ministry of Health revealed that up to the end of November 6,927 units of blood have been collected by the NBTS.Of that number, voluntary blood donors contributed 3,900 units of all the blood collected, while the NBTS was responsible for the collection of 5,643 units. In this regard, the Ministry of Health had urged the private sector hospitals to promote voluntary donation of blood, as the Ministry continues to make progress in recruiting more voluntary blood donors.Only a few months ago, the NBTS had experienced a severe shortage of blood at the blood bank, as an ‘SOS’ was issued for persons to immediately donate blood, since it was explained that if a major disaster were to occur in the country then the bank would not have enough blood to utilise if the need arises.Kaieteur News was told that the severe shortage might have been as a result of the drop in voluntary donors, especially during the hosting of CARIFESTA X in Guyana. In the meantime, while there was a call for persons to donate blood on a constant basis, a PEPFAR report had revealed that there may still be problems with the management of blood in Guyana, as it was noted that the NBTS had dumped blood that was spoilt due to the lack of inadequate or inappropriate storage facilities. However Minister Ramsammy had said that the report is absolute nonsense, although he admitted that the blood bank indeed discards blood, as he had explained that all blood banks in the world do the same thing.

? Minister RamsammyHealth Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy is to commence an investigation today into reports that some 100,000 doses of HINI vaccines have spoiled due to negligence on the part of officers within the health sector. The vaccines are said to be valued at some $40M.According to reports reaching this newspaper the vaccines had arrived in good condition but were not properly refrigerated causing them to spoil. Reports are that at least one person has since been sent on leave as a result of this negligence.Speaking to this newspaper yesterday the Minister said that he only returned to Guyana Saturday morning having attended the World Health Assembly in Geneva,Cheap Soccer Jerseys, Switzerland, during the past week.According to the Minister he has no knowledge that the vaccines have spoiled as no officer of his Ministry has so far informed him. “If this is the case I will be really upset that they chose not to inform me of something so serious,” the Minister noted. “I just returned and I was on cabinet outreach in Region 10 and I have not heard that anything is wrong with the vaccines.”He did however note that prior to his departure that some 100,Wholesale MLB Jerseys,000 doses were scheduled to arrive to continue the HINI vaccination process which commenced a few months ago.? The Minister revealed that the vaccines were not procured by the government but rather represents another donation from the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation ((PAHO/WHO). According to the Minister, he has been able to negotiate with the PAHO/WHO to donate the HINI vaccines to Guyana. So far some 300,000 doses have been assured of which 200,000 should have already arrived, the Minister added. Another 100,000 he said will be sent as the need arises. As such the Minister noted that there has been no need for the Ministry to procure any HINI vaccines. “I have been trying to supplement what we have at the Ministry of Health with as much donations as possible and I was aware that PAHO/WHO had excess vaccines so I took advantage of that and negotiated for the vaccines that we have gotten.”Almost two months have already elapsed since the arrival of the first batch of HINI vaccines to these shores allowing for some vulnerable groups to access the medication. Acting Chief Nursing Officer, Tarmattie Barker, had recently revealed to this newspaper that persons have been accessing the vaccine at the Ministry of Health and at all health facilities in the various regions. The municipal facilities,Mens Air Jordan Retro 3 Black Cement Grey 136064-010, she noted, have not been an exception in offering the vaccine. “For the past few weeks we have had teams going out in Sophia, on the East Coast and the East Bank of Demerara…We even had teams visiting schools as well that were giving out the HINI vaccine…” Barker had related. And according to her there have been no reports of side effects from persons who have already received the vaccine. The amount of vaccines already administered is yet to be ascertained as according to Barker the reports have to be compiled to determine the actual figure. Some 75,000 doses of the vaccine arrived in Guyana during the latter part of March month compliments of PAHO/WHO.? Minister Ramsammy,Chelsea Fc Jersey Cheap, had revealed then that some 160,000 persons were identified as eligible to be vaccinated.     A young Amerindian from the North West District is seeking medical attention in the city following a severe beating last Saturday, reportedly at the hands of a group of soldiers posing as policemen, in what was described as a robbery.Kurt Wong, 16, and his friend, Anthony, are alleging that they were tortured by the soldiers,Cheap Jerseys Store, who had invaded the merchant boat they were sleeping on, keeping watch. The soldiers, including a lieutenant, were positively identified, and have reportedly begged the youths to settle the matter, promising to return the items that were reportedly stolen.Police at the Mabaruma Police Station, where the matter was reported, confirmed that they are investigating the matter but declined to give any further details.Speaking to this newspaper yesterday, Wong, who is seeking an x-ray to determine the extent of his injuries, related that he and his friend were sleeping on the vessel, which was moored at the KMC Wharf, when they were rudely awakened by the intruders, who pointed guns at their heads.According to him, this was at about 03:00 hours on Saturday.Wong claimed that the men, who were in civilian clothing, carried machine guns and identified themselves as policemen. They held the two youths at gunpoint, and one of them proceeded to rummage through the youths’ pockets.Wong said that the men took his Motorola Razr cellular phone and a gold chain valued at more than $100,000, while his friend was relieved of his gold chain and ring.Despite this, the men were not finished with them.“They snatched the chain from my neck and started to beat me. They tell me they will kill me and say, ‘Find de money! We want de money!’” the teenager recalled. He said that one of the men pointed his gun at him and demanded to know where the boss was.“My friend told them, ‘If y’all is police, I could take y’all to the boss man’. He and two others left and went to the boss man house.”According to Wong, because of the hour, the boss refused to open up, and the men returned to the boat with his colleague. He said that the men kept slapping his ears with the palms of their hands, drawing blood.“I say, ‘Why y’all beating me?’ Dey point dey gun to my chest, and at that time I really thought that they would kill me,” he related. The men then threw him into the river and, suffering from severe pains about his body, Wong said that he almost drowned. One of the men, sensing that Wong was in danger, jumped into the water and pushed him to shore. But the ordeal was still not over.Wong said that the men took them from the boat and ordered them to fetch five cases of Polar beer that they had left in the trail. The two young men were made to fetch the beers for about a mile, and when they complained of being tired, they were punched in their abdomens and forced to walk faster.“I begged them, I tell them I can’t make it, but they keep cuffing me in my ribs,” Wong related.Eventually, they reached a house which is located opposite the Mabaruma Secondary School, where they were made to put down the beers. The men then told the youths to turn around and run.“They crank dey gun and I begged them not to shoot us if we run. I say, ‘Officer, if we run, please don’t shoot we’.”Later that morning, the two youths, with blood oozing from their mouths and ears, reported the matter to the police. They were surprised to learn that the men whom they thought were policemen were in fact soldiers. The soldiers were summoned and were positively identified, despite denying taking part in any such incident. But a part of the incident was also witnessed by some residents, who identified the soldiers, including a lieutenant, as the perpetrators.Eventually, the lieutenant apologized to the youths and offered to replace the stolen cellular phone.“He begged we to settle the matter. Even the police asked us to settle,” Wong told Kaieteur News. But, with the pain becoming unbearable, Wong and an older relative decided to travel to Georgetown, since the hospital at Port Kaituma does not have an x-ray machine. While in the city, they contacted an attorney-at-law, who subsequently contacted the police at Mabaruma. However, no one there volunteered to speak to the attorney. Wong is expected to be examined by a doctor today, while his friend, who is reportedly not in a financial position to travel, is being treated in the North West District.According to the older relative who accompanied Wong, this type of behaviour by the security forces is nothing new.“They do it all the time, but because we are Amerindians and poor, people are afraid to report these incidents. It is only because we had to come to town that we decided to speak,” the relative related. This newspaper tried to contact the Guyana Defence Force but was unsuccessful. This recent incident comes at a time when there is still controversy over who killed the eight miners at Lindo Creek during the hunt for Rondell ‘Fine Man’ Rawlins and his gang.

The bauxite centennial committee in collaboration with the Guyana Post Office Corporation recently unveiled four centennial stamps in observance of the bauxite industry’s centennial anniversary. The unveiling was done at the Three Friends Mine, Region Ten, the site where bauxite was first mined in October 1916, and where the first bridge ((Hope) over the Demerara River, was established.Chief engineer of BOSAI minerals, and member of the Bauxite Century committee, Orin Barnwell, provided a breakdown of the evolution of bauxite from 1916 to 2016.Barnwell highlighted the early days of mining which involved manual labour with pick axes and shovels. In his reflections, Barnwell pointed out that in 1916 pick axes and shovels were the tools of extraction while mule carts and wooden barges or punts were used to transport the ore.He spoke of how a nine mile long railway was established in 1920 from Three Friends Mine to Mackenzie and the how instruments of that time were steam shovels and locomotives.According to Barnwell, in 1939 during the Second World War, Guyana exported 4.6 million tons of bauxite to Canada for the production of aluminium war planes. By that time the industry was using diesel and electrical powered machinery. Then came the 1960’s – the era of the bucket wheel excavator and the eight walking draglines. The year 2003 saw the implementation of hydraulic excavators and off highway trucks. This was largely due to the energy deficiency of 2003. The industry also stopped using explosives, that year,Segunda Equipacion Barcelona 2019, Barnwell said.Steve Connolly,China NFL Jerseys, author of “Children of Watooka”, a son of expatriates who was born in Guyana spoke about the bauxite industry from an expatriate point of view. The Guyana Post Office Corporation was represented by Postmaster General, Karen Brown, who introduced the stamps and provided background to the collaboration of the GPOC and the Bauxite Century Committee to make the stamps a reality. The Stamps were funded by R.U.S.A.L Guyana Bauxite Company Incorporated.Brown said that the stamps will be available in $80,Discount NFL Jerseys, $140, $150, $180 denominations at post offices country wide. She reflected on the British Guiana one-cent black on magenta which was printed in Georgetown,Stitched Jerseys, Guyana in April 1856, and is now one of the most valuable, rare and famous stamps in the world. It was issued in limited numbers in British Guiana ((now Guyana) 160 years ago.In 2014,NFL Jerseys From China, the stamp was sold for US$9.58 million. It has broken the world record for a single stamp auction price. The stamp is now on display at the American Postal Museum in Washington DC.Brown said that the “Commemorative stamps are the perfect memorabilia to celebrate an anniversary or significant event such as this since it is circulated both locally and internationally to a wide cross section of people.”Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Public Telecommunication was her advisor, Enrico Woolford, who noted that the unveiling of the stamps “serves as a reminder of our right to disseminate and receive information”.He said that the event also shows the relevance of the post office and expressed the hope to soon see post offices as information, Communication, technology ((ICT) hubs in the near future as part of Guyana’s E-Governance plans. The stamps were unveiled by Enrico Woolford, aided by BC committee Chairman Horace James,Bayern M??nchen Trikot 2019, Three Friends Mine’s oldest resident Leah Lorimer and a student of the Coomacka Primary School.Highlights of the ceremony included cultural presentations by four time consecutive champions of the festival of choirs competition, the Region Ten choir, and poetry by Coomacka primary student Romona Fraser and Kezia McDonald from Regma Primary School. Both poems were reflections of bauxite mining.

That was when the police told him that on October 12 he should appear for court. “There was no court.”The 28-year-old said,China Jerseys, that after all the disappointment he visited Eve Leary. He was further disappointed when he was refused a meeting with the Commissioner of Police. “They told me to go back to Linden, and I tell the commander that the police at Linden don’t have any information to give me. I come for information…he gave me no satisfaction.”He explained that the officer appeared to be trigger-happy. There was an altercation between his cousin and the police rank one year ago.On this occasion he said that he just wanted to intervene to enquire what the issue was. When contact was made with a Linden police source, it was revealed that the case is within the Office of the DPP. The source said that charges would be laid pending recommendations.

The mother of a first form student of the Lodge Community High School is moving to transfer her son from the institution, citing escalating violence as her main reason.Delores Grant’s son is the latest victim of the rising violence in school. The lad was held down by a gang of students his age group and stabbed in his abdomen with a sharp object. He received treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital around midday yesterday. His wound does not appear to be life threatening. The young man told this newspaper that he was walking on the school grounds when one of the gang members who is a first former pelted him.He said that he returned the favour and the gang attacked him, pinning him to the ground while one of them stabbed him.According to the injured young man, while his attackers are students of the school, they hardly attend classes. He told Kaieteur News that he reported the matter to the school’s Head teacher who advised him to call his parents, which he did.Grant informed that she was at home when she received the telephone call from her son.“He say ‘mommy four boys just hold me down and stab me’. The headmistress come on and confirm the stabbing, but she say it’s a very complicated story. She tell me that I must come to the school, collect him, carry he to the station and then bring he to the hospital because she don’t have the time,” Grant stated. She expressed concern at the way the school administration handled the matter.“I know if something happen in school, the teachers suppose to carry them ((student) to the station and then to the hospital, but she tell me no, I got to come,” the injured student’s mother told this newspaper.Since she is living in Sophia she could not leave home at the time so after ascertaining the extent of her son’s injury, she advised him to come home. She subsequently took him to the hospital to ensure that the damage was minimal. There have been several reports of violence at the Lodge Community High School and according to Grant,Cheap Nike Shoes China, the teachers there are fully aware of the situation.“First thing when they get meetings and you go, how they so proud, they could show you how much tables with ice picks, jukker, cutlass and all these things wha these children does just carry to school,” Grant stated. She said that when she enquired from the Headmistress the whereabouts of her son’s attackers, the senior school official informed her that they don’t attend classes and that she was not aware of their location at the time. However, it was pointed out that an hour after the stabbing, the attackers were seen fully decked in their school uniforms a short distance from the East La Penitence Police Station.Even the police are apparently fed up with receiving reports of violence from the Lodge Community High School.“They ((police) say only the other day the teacher bring a whole set of weapons wha de children carry to school. They ((school administration) know about it and them ain’t doing nothing. They tell me that they took away the weapon from the child who stab my son. If you ain’t know the child, how you could tek away the weapon and it in the headmistress office to carry to the station tomorrow ((today),” Grant told this newspaper. She is adamant that she will not be sending her son back to the Lodge Community High School out of fear that something more serious could happen to him.

By Tiffanne Ramphal Projecting the outlook that concerns of the Amaila Falls Hydro Project do not only concern those politically inclined were members of the Progressive Youth Organisation ((PYO),Cheap NCAA Basketball Jerseys, who turned up in their vast numbers outside Parliament Building yesterday. The youth-based group staged a spirited picketing exercise to voice their concerns with the Parliamentary Opposition’s stance on the development of the hydro project. The action included a staging in front of the Office of the Leader of the Opposition. However, the group’s members claimed to have been forced to move by “elements emerging from the compound”.Romel Roopnarine relays the group’s concerns to members of the media.Lining the pavement east of the Parliament building, the youths waved their placards with statements of “Youths need development, not cuts” and “APNU/ AFC trying to steal the future of our youths”, while heartily chanting “We want hydro power,Maglia Ufficiale Milan 2018/19, Opposition slowing the progress”.Romel Roopnarine, member of the National Steering Committee/ Public Affairs Officer of the PYO, described the active protest as joining the chorus of Guyana’s citizens in coming forward in support of the project. He said that the group has always been supportive of the Amaila Falls Hydro Project, and as such, they are concerned about the message that the Opposition has been sending.“The first issue that they raised was the issue of corruption and transparency in this project. Suddenly, that position has been shifted to the feasibility of the project”, Roopnarine said.He said that it is their strong belief that the Opposition “jumping from one position to the next” is really an attempt to stall the positive developments of the hydro project.Roopnarine pointed out that the circumstances are not new, since the Opposition had opposed other “transformational” projects in the past.“Of course they have an excuse for every initiative. Every single project they have opposed,Maglia Milan 2018/19, and that sends a message.”By means of the protest,Arthur Moats Jersey, the youths hoped to signal to the Opposition as well as to the Government that they are in full support of efforts to realise the AFHP since “it stands to benefit all Guyanese, particularly youths”.Roopnarine called to mind increased employment that would be brought about for youths, as well as cheaper energy that is projected to be provided once the project pulls through.“We want to ensure that the youths here and our children are bequeathed with a future that is deserving of them.”While the group had indicated that their collective decision to voice their concerns were independent, a statement issued by Opposition alliance,Adidas Pas Cher Chine, A Partnership for National Unity ((APNU), pointed towards a diverse start.According to the statement, APNU had been informed that workers from Mahaica-Berbice ((Region Five) were bullied and coerced into travelling to Georgetown to picket in front of the Office of the Leader of the Opposition and Parliament Buildings. The statement said that workers from the Region had called into the Office to complain that they are being forced to travel to Georgetown to protest.“They said they were told that they have to go and protest against the Opposition because they voted against the Hydro.”Further,Nike Air Max Online Ireland, Leader of the Opposition, David Granger, expressed that he believes that the protestors do not know what they are protesting for. He explained that in contrast to what the group views as the Opposition’s stance on the project, they have opposed the proposed Bill to raise the debt ceiling and not the hydro project itself. He added that he understands that some chose to come because they were being released from work and were provided with transportation.Additionally, APNU’s Shadow Minister of Local Government, Ronald Bulkan agreed with the Opposition Leader when he noted that the protestors do not have a full understanding and appreciation of what it is that they are so vocally demanding.“This project is mired in controversy. And if it comes to fruition in its current form, it will be an albatross around the necks of Guyanese people, and it is those very young people who will be saddled with the responsibility of repaying that debt. It will be a millstone around their necks.”Protestors raise their placards outside Parliament Building.“It will be over $2.2 Billion for a project that should cost one-quarter for the size and capacity,” the Shadow Minister pointed out.He also made reference to a letter written by Alliance For Change ((AFC) Vice Chairman, Moses Nagamootoo, in which it was stated that the per capita national debt now stands at $50,000. He said that the analogy was made that for every baby born now, they are faced with an IOU, owing the state $50,000.“We are actually mortgaging the future of our young people through a misguided project that is mired in controversy. That project needs to go back to the drawing board.”The Shadow Minister expressed his regret that “young people are being misguided” and that their time should have been spent more productively rather than to be used by politicians to narrow and selfish ends.
