The introduction of the Giftland Mall was praised by Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo as the single largest innovation in commerce in Guyana.Giftland President, Roy Beepat ((right) shows off the Mall’s department store to the Prime Minister and his wife.He expressed this view following a tour of the Pattensen, East Coast Demerara ((ECD), complex yesterday. The tour was conducted by Giftland’s President,Discount NFL Jerseys, Roy Beepat. It included visits to the power-plant, shopping areas and the Caribbean Cinema’s eight screen Cineplex.Among the tour group was the Prime Minister’s wife, Sita Nagamootoo, as well as Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson. The tour of the complex came ahead of the Mall’s July 2 public opening.During the tour of the US$24M mall, the group visited the five-megawatt dual generators which will power the entire complex. After the tour of the power-station, the group visited four of the stores which will be operational in the mall’s phase one opening. Among the stores were the electronic, sports department and home furnishing stores. The Prime Minister remarked that one could “walk the whole day in here,” as the tour continued through various sections of the complex.Beepat led the delegation to one of the mall’s most anticipated features? the CaribbeanPM Moses Nagamootoo and his wife, Sita Nagamootoo cosy up in one of Caribbean Cinema’s theatres.Cinemas Cineplex. The delegation had the chance to experience the cinema’s seating, surround sound system and multi-storey screen. The Prime Minister appeared particularly impressed by the cinema. He and his wife reclined in the seats of the cinema as if on a first date.Caribbean Cinemas is a Puerto Rican-based company which has over 400 screens across the region. Their Guyana opening will be the company’s first mainland operation, and is said to have the latest technology including 3D capability in all eight screens. The cineplex boasts 1100 seats. After the tour, the Prime Minister related his excitement for the project and said that he has never seen anything like it in his 53 years of public life. To that end, he added that the mall will cater to a standard which Guyanese look forward to.“Guyanese always look forward to having high quality services and to have delivery of services,” said PM Nagamootoo. He noted that this will not only mean affordable shopping but services outside of just buying products. The Giftland Mall was also deemed a multiplex which is going to provide a multi-dimensional view of business, said the Prime Minister. He added it can be a business “boom” as more establishments aim for higher quality and better environments.Sharing in this sentiment was Public Infrastructure Minister, Patterson who was impressed by the layout and what it has to offer to the public. As someone who has travelled extensively, Minister Patterson said that he thinks the mall will be a success “especially in the entertainment area”.“These are the types of projects we ((in Guyana) need to do. Internally funded projects are what we need to move the country forward, rather than waiting on a foreign investor.” said the Minister. He added that he was notified that the country’s banks have over US$1.2B of inactive liquidity and such projects, by private businesses, can go a far way in developing the country.

By Kiana Wilburg The outstanding US$5M to be paid on the sale of Government’s shares in GTT to a ChineseMinister of State, Joseph Harmoncompany remains an unsolved mystery. However, the Alliance For Change ((AFC), Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo, says it will not become another cold case. The First Vice President said on Friday, at a press conference,Cheap NFL Jerseys Wholesale, that he will push for the issue to be resolved.Minister of State, Joseph Harmon,Camiseta Fc Barcelona 2018, had reportedly received some revealing documents on the outstanding sum from Hong Kong Golden Telecom Company ((HKGT), the company that bought Government’s shares in GTT.Nagamootoo was then asked if he has seen those documents at the level of Cabinet. The Prime Minister said, “I cannot say that I have seen the document.”Nagamootoo explained that at the level of Cabinet where he chairs the business section, protocol dictates that when he would receive a memorandum which would have attachments. He said that the issue of the Harmon documents comes up as a report and not as a memorandum.“I would have to pursue this with Harmon to have a look at the documents and what they reveal. This is a mystery issue and a phantom financial issue that we encountered.”Channeling his inner journalist, the Prime Minister told the media that he did his own inquiries into the matter. He was able to discover that the original procurers of the GTT shares had offered US$30m. He noted that the company subsequently sold its shares to Datang.“Then we heard all the shenanigans about whether they ((Datang) should be given a silver or golden voting rights on the GTT board and if they didn’t then they wouldn’t pay the US$5M,Nike Air Max Suomi,” The Prime Minister said.Prime Minister, Moses NagamootooHe added, “If there was a variation to the contract then we should have seen the contract. But we have not seen the contract that says US$5M of the US$30M was contingent to whether or not the Datang group would have majority share or voting rights…That is where I said there is a mystery surrounding the outstanding sum and it is still a phantom sum.”The controversial State company,T Shirt Juventus Bambino, National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited ((NICIL), tasked with ascertaining the truth of the matter, does not seem to be making any significant headway. Some weeks ago, Minister of State,Uniforme Del Real Madrid 2018, Joseph Harmon, who is also a NICIL board member, was asked whether the media would be able to see those documents he got from his trip to China and whether they would be made available.Harmon, said, “That is a matter for NICIL; that my engagement on that matter was on behalf of NICIL and therefore all the documents, some of which I received in that regard, have been handed to NICIL. It is within the responsibility and jurisdiction of NICIL.”Harmon said that NICIL has a Board, a Chairman and a Secretary and he is “just” a member. It was in 2012 that NICIL sold the Government’s investment in GTT for US$30M of which the sum of US$25M was received. The balance,Yeezy Scarpe Italia, US$5M,Wholesale Authentic Jerseys, was to be paid within a period of two years. But there have been conflicting stories since that initial arrangement. At one point, the nation was told that Guyana’s former Ambassador to China, David Dabydeen, facilitated a debt write-off to HKGT.HKGT is a subsidiary of Datang Telecom International Technology ((Hong Kong) Company Limited.Kaieteur News understands that the purchase agreement between the Chinese company and Guyana was framed in such a manner that in the event of any legal issue, Guyana or HKGT would have to petition the United Kingdom courts.NICIL had said that in an attempt to avoid costly and lengthy adjudication of the matter in the English Courts, it called on the government to encourage HKGT through diplomatic channels, to honour its contractual obligations.NICIL said that HKGT alleged that following a series of communications with the former Guyana Ambassador to China, HKGT was assured that it was not required to pay the balance of US$5M.This was because HKGT had not been granted the same minority protection rights enjoyed by NICIL?that is two representatives, instead of one, on the GT&T Board of Directors. HKGT alleged that it was initially promised two seats by the then Government of Guyana.NICIL said that HKGT also alleged that the decision to waive the US$5M was contained in a side agreement.NICIL noted that it has not been able to verify HKGT’s claim of waiver and has requested the assistance of the Government of Guyana to verify the validity of HKGT’s assertion and the documents they produced to support same.

What started out as a highly anticipated event for residents of Sophia yesterday proved to be a great disappointment to a majority of the gathering since the official commissioning of the Sophia Water Treatment Plant was postponed. President Bharrat Jagdeo failed to show up.Never the less, cheap nfl jerseys, Jose Manuel Ruiz, Chief of Operations, Inter-American Development Bank ((IDB) Country Office,Tottenham t Shirt Sale, played his role at the “would be commissioning ceremony”.Ruiz explained that it was only one week ago that the Inter American Development Bank was in Linden signing off on two operations; the Linden Water Rehabilitation Programme which is a US$12M loan that would benefit the residents of Linden by improving water quality and efficiency of the water supply system, and the Caribbean Regional Wastewater Management.Besides the Linden Programme,Wholesale NCAA Jerseys, the Guyana Water Incorporated ((GWI) is currently implementing with IDB resources:– A US$10M “Georgetown Sanitation Improvement Program” with the objective of improving the Georgetown sewerage system and strengthen GWI performance by improving asset management and decreasing energy consumption– The TC “Financial and Institutional Strengthening of GWI ((US$500,000) aimed at improving GWI operating procedures and accounting system; and– The TC “Preparation for the Water and Sanitation Upgrade Program” ((US$650,000) aimed among other things at updating the 1995 sewerage master plan for Georgetown. The US$14.7M Georgetown Water Supply and Sewer System Programme was completed in 2010 with the aim of improving the sanitary conditions of the population in Georgetown.Another aim was to reduce the current levels of environmental degradation through an improvement in the quality of the water supply and sewerage services. In order to achieve this goal, the program had three objectives;((a) the improvement in the availability and quality of potable water and the reliability of the distribution system;((b) the improvement in the level of operation of the sewerage system; and((c) the consolidation and further improvement of GWI as the operating agency.Under components ((a) and ((b), Iron Removal plants were constructed at Sophia and Central Ruimveldt. Additional outputs of the program included rehabilitation works of the sewerage system and works at the GWI’s Shelterbelt.Minister of Housing and Water,Maglia Juventus Vendita, Irfaan Ali, told the gathering that water treatment is a “very expensive formula” and in 2006, 25 percent of the population had access to treated water. To date, 45 percent can now access treated water and the aim is to have at least 70 percent of the entire Guyanese population in five years times benefitting from access to treated water.Though 98 per cent of the Coastal population can access water, it is still a limited per cent that can access treated water,Soccer Jerseys From China, since Guyana’s water content has a high level of iron.As he highlighted areas of importance to the water sector,Cheap NFL Jerseys, Minister Ali pointed out that an area which is very critical is wastage and results of “line wastage”.Since many households for some period of time could not access water, people resorted to breaking some water lines and this has proven to be costly for GWI since a lot of money had to be spent to conduct necessary repairs,White NFL Jerseys Cheap, not forgetting there was a high wastage of flowing water.“Another integral piece to be completed is the Cummings Lodge Well which has not been activated as yet. In two weeks we will be able to fully activate the complete system and the level of service here at Sophia will be improved greater.”He stated that there has been tremendous improvement in pressure and flow of water for the past five years since nearly $3.6B has been invested to improve water services in Region Four. With the addition of the Sophia Water Treatment Plant another 30,000 residents are expected to benefit from improved water service due to the construction of this water facility.According to GWI’s Executive Director of Capital Investment and Planning, Ramchand Jailal, the fully functional Sophia Water Treatment Plant was funded by the IDB to the tune of in excess of $300M. The facility was constructed by the Trinidad-based firm UEM Inc.“This new facility successfully serves the population in and around Sophia “A” Field, Sophia “B” Field, Bel Air and Prashad Nagar” said Jailal.Information from a press release sent by GWI stated that the new Sophia Water Treatment Plant is a state-of-the-art facility which comprises of a modern energy efficient gravity type water treatment technology. The plant utilizes a sodium hypochlorite generation system which aids in the chlorine purification process. It is complemented by aerators and lime dosing systems which aid in the adjustment of concentration ions ((acidity and alkaline) content and oxidation tanks that facilitate the removal of iron via filtration and backwash lagoons. The facility is also supported by an electricity control building which aids in efficient operation.

The date was March 13,Camiseta Real Madrid Tienda, 1913; exactly 103 years ago when 15 sugar workers were snatched away from the face of the Earth – shot by colonial police at the Rose Hall Estate,Stitched NCAA Jerseys, Berbice. This incident later became known as the Rose Hall Disturbance while these workers became known as the Rose Hall Martyrs. 14 men and one woman were killed. The dead were Badri, 26; Bholay, 33; Durga, 72; Gafur, 27; Jugai, 30; Juggoo, 37; Hulas, 25; Lalji, 45; Motey Khan, 26; Nibur, 75; Roopan, 25; Sadulla, 23; Sarjoo,Jerseys From China, 21; Sohan, 33; and the lone female, Gobindei, 32.Their bodies were transported in jute bags on donkey carts to the New Amsterdam Hospital. Forty-one workers were also injured. This horrific incident has been deemed by the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union ((GAWU) as “one of the ugliest reminders of British colonialism and another manifestation of the brutal conditions our forefathers had to contend with,”“Removed from this landmark event by over 100 years, we nevertheless get a grasp of what was at the root of the riot and killing from the work of researcher and author, Basdeo Mangru.”The turn of the 20th century saw a spike of work stoppages and strikes in the Estates. As workers grew more active in resisting their oppressive conditions or in attempts by Managers to deprive them of things they were already receiving which, in those times, seriously impacted their lives. The Rose Hall Martyrs Monument in BerbiceThe problems and issues on the Estates were accumulating and resistance, as a consequence, was increasing.“Ten ((10) years before the Rose Hall incident, Mangru wrote that another major incident took place at Friends Estate where several workers were killed. The issue was a demand for a wage increase,”At Rose Hall in 1913, what triggered the workers’ protests was the reneging by Manager, James Smith, of a promise of four days of additional holidays to workers due to their positive and encouraging work performance. This retreat, it seems, came at a time when discontent was rife. It ignited an obviously combustible situation, which quickly deteriorated. One action led to a counter-action eventually leading to the shooting of the workers.“Significantly too, researcher Mangru wrote that this riot was raised in the Legislature of India by the Indian nationalists who used this horrifying act to strengthen the call to end the indentureship system,” the GAWU said.“The GAWU, through established much later after this barbaric event, recognized the struggles and sacrifices of generations of sugar workers whose contribution have brought about many changes in workers living and working conditions.”The GAWU said that they “specifically give recognition and pay tribute to those who fell at Plantation Rose Hall. They left a legacy which runs through the veins of the contemporary workforce of the sugar industry. This anniversary furthermore affords us the platform to remember with fondness and pride those who also courageously fought and heroically fell in the struggles in other plantations in other parts of the country.”These fallen workers, GAWU said, reminds them that sugar’s history is enriched by the struggles, sacrifices and the sweat and blood of the working class. That spirit has been kept alive over decades and survives to this day in the industry.“We accuse colonialism and the plantocracy system it sustained for these brutal deaths. In this event, we see that the owners’ class will stop at no crime to protect their property and profit. But the workers’ sacrifices were not in vain.”In the time that has elapsed since this historic event at Rose Hall Estate, the workers in the industry and the industry itself have advanced in several ways. It is, therefore, regrettable that attempts are constantly being made to rollback hard won gains in the industry.“Increasingly, sugar workers find themselves engaged in actions to defend their rights and interests against our home-grown bureaucrats and their hirelings. Our times, in many ways,Adidas Yeezy Shop Online Italia, differ from the era in which the Rose Hall Martyrs lived. Conditions are not the same and the demands we make are different yet continue to revolve around the fight for decent and rising wages and better working conditions.”“Indeed, such are the struggles before the workers in Guyana and the world over. And, while demanding, on one hand, these class struggles hold out the promise of further achievements,Jerseys NFL Cheap, and significant social changes in the future.“Many years have gone by since that fateful period when the workers from Rose Hall were killed. 103 years later we pay respect to their memory. They dared to challenge the existing socio-economic order for a better day. But improvement is a constant feature of our existence and in our day, a new generation continues to raise its voice and make fresh demands for all-round improvements.”“In our fight of today,Cheap Air Max 90 Online, we also remember past battles and those like the Rose Hall Martyrs who have been the victims of colonial plunder and exploitation.“History’s lessons should not be forgotten lest workers lower their vigilance and succumb to disunity to their detriment. Workers struggles have not come to a close. Indeed, their struggles continue but in a different context and in different circumstances than what faced the Rose Hall Martyrs,” the GAWU statement concluded.

By Enid Joaquin‘Lime, tomato, celery, seasoning’–the lyrics of a popular soca song,Authentic Nike NFL Gear, written by the talented Michael James and sung by the equally talented George Anthony Abrams, is done to such hypnotic rhythms that both the young and old are tempted to shake a leg, whenever or wherever the song is played. But little thought is given to the genesis of the lyrics, which captures the sales call of those vending the condiments, and even less to the men and women who toil in the fields, day after day to produce them. From typewriters and stilettos to spade and long boots, Vilma Tyson, an enterprising and independent woman, is one of those farmer/vendors to whom the song is somewhat of an anthem–albeit with slightly modified lyrics, depending on the particular crops in season.Sometimes it’s ‘okra, boulanger, pumpkin, plantains- or bora, squash, oranges, bananas!’Preparing for her trip to the marketHowever, whatever the sales pitch,Maglia Ufficiale Milan 2018/19, to Tyson the goal is always the same-? to sell the produce from her West Watooka Farm.Tyson has had a long love affair with mother earth, because even as a secretary and administrative assistant, wearing stockings and stilettos and clacking away on a typewriter, she was planting and selling vegetables on the side. This supplemented her income greatly, and certainly put more food in her pot. Tyson confesses that her love for farming was nurtured during the time she spent working with the late President Forbes Burnham, who mandated that all his staff owned a kitchen garden.“So I developed an interest in farming, because one of the things we had to do during Burnham time was go to Hope Estate and you also had to go to the cane fields.“In those days I used to get up early in the mornings, thanks to the daylight saving time,((another Burnham initiative) and tend to my kitchen garden, before I go to work. At the time I was living in South Ruimveldt in Georgetown, and I used to sell some of the things right from that garden. Since then I grew to love farming, and better yet I realized I could make money doing it.Decades later, Tyson has honed her farming skills to the extent that she presently makes her living from it.And she has graduated from the kitchen garden in South Ruimveldt, to acres of farmland at West Watooka.? But she can no longer sell her crops to the neighbors, as her new homestead sits among a community of farmers. She currently sells her produce from the comfort of her “tent-boat”, which she moors at the Adams boat landing at the Mackenzie River Front on most weekdays, but especially on weekends.A lot of her customers are the people crossing the river with the popular boat service, but? other people seek her out from as far as Amelia’s Ward and Coomacka, to purchase her farm fresh produce.Tyson seems the typical farmer, with her trade mark head tie and cap, and is only one of two vendors,Cheap Jerseys Wholesale, who sell their produce at the River front, from the confines of a boat. The boat is fully equipped with outboard engine, which she operates herself, for her market trips.Tyson said that she was forced to find alternative means to market her produce,Cheap Jerseys China, after the Town Council mandated that all vendors remove from the Coop Crescent thoroughfare, which she had formerly occupied.Ms. Tyson at her nursery“Boat Vending” thus became the chosen modus operandi for her, after her unsuccessful bid to obtain a stall on the now popular vendors’ wharf, which was the alternative venue for the displaced vendors.‘I remember seeing persons vending from their boats, while I travelled in the Caribbean, so I thought I would give it a try, and I’ve never regretted my decision”, Tyson declared. She added that her aim was to make the boat as comfortable as possible, as she was going to spend a lot of time in it. Fitting it with a ‘roof,’ to save her from the elements, suited her purpose perfectly.Tyson maintains that her present occupation has afforded her a comfortable lifestyle, because even as a single mother, she was able to build her own home- not the typical farmhouse, but a beautiful and modern home.In reflecting on her younger days Tyson spoke of her ‘office work’, which she used to ‘juggle’ with her academic pursuits that would see her attending the University of Guyana. Her first place of employment was the Guyana National Service, where she was employed as a secretary. She would later move on to the Referendum programme in 1981, and then seconded to the office of then President of Guyana, Forbes Burnham. After her tenure at the Office of the President, Tyson said she moved on to a few Ministries, serving in various capacities.“But the area that spoke most into my life is when I worked with President Burnham, because when I went there I had my qualifications in shorthand and typing and English, but I was encouraged to attend the Critchlow? Labour College, which afforded me the opportunity to attend a commonwealth youth programme, where I spent two years with Malcolm Parris and others, and it was from there that I began to branch out, because they were the people that encouraged me to do anything that I set my heart on, because I was young, and I had ‘to get on stream’, Tyson reflected. She would later seek and gain employment with the Guyana Electricity Corporation as an Administrative Assistant, and later the Guyana Revenue Authority, from where she retired in 2005.NOT THE ENDWhen Tyson retired from the GRA in 2005, she did not wring her hands and wonder what she was going to do- she already knew. She had decided that instead of becoming just another stay-at-home single mother, she was going to be once more gainfully employed, but this time around she was going to be her own boss. She would launch into farming in a big way.Her first move was to join the Region 10 Farmers Association, which afforded opportunities to attend workshops in Grenada and elsewhere. She noted that, except for two instances where she was granted land clearing assistance from LEAP, she did not seek funding from any financial institution, to launch her new farming project, but utilized her personal savings.Tyson currently has seven and a half acres of land which she cultivates, with every crop imaginable,Camiseta Fc Barcelona 2018, but cited her greatest challenge, which is labour.“Because the land is fertile here you can plant anything, but because of the problem with labour there is only so much you can do. People don’t want to work hard-they want fast money,Cheap Nike NFL Jerseys Free Shipping, so there is a problem attracting workers,” she lamented.Despite this however, she continues to persevere, sometimes managing the farm alone.Another problem is the lack of potable water. She has to pump water from the river for household purposes as well as to water her crops,Cheap NFL Jerseys Wholesale, even though the West Watooka GWI water treatment plant is less than half a mile away. She has to buy drinking water or depend on rain water. There is also no electricity where Tyson lives. She has applied to LUSCSL for power for the past twelve years she said, but to date is still without lights.“Now I would like to go into poultry rearing in a big way, but with no electricity that would be tough-I can’t do it. Right now we have to use generators and battery lamps and that is very costly. Let them give me electricity and they will see what I can do.”These challenges would be enough to make other persons less resilient give up, but not Tyson, who has instead worked out strategies to further consolidate her position. She is in the process of acquiring and planting three thousand cherry plants, which she intends to cultivate on a large scale. The cherry trees would not require as much labour and man hours as the cash crops, and as such, overtime would yield more profits, she concedes.Apart from that, her present ‘in nursery crops,’ include three hundred tomato plants and ‘numerous pakchoi and pepper plants. She also plants red peas, pumpkins and water melons.More permanent crops include coconuts, citrus, plantains and bananas. With only two workers to help her, Tyson is currently clearing her fields, and pruning her citrus trees. Her favorite working times are very early in the mornings, and late in the afternoons.“Farming does not have to be stressful or tedious, you only have to pace yourself, and avoid working when the sun is too hot’’, she advises.Tyson has three grown children, two girls and one boy, all of whom have walked in their mother’s footsteps and presently run their own businesses.Michelle, the eldest is a trader in clothing and other goods in Georgetown, while her younger sister Roshelle rears cattle in Berbice. The youngest is a barber and lives with her at West Watooka. This proud and independent single parent advises people- especially youths, and single parents like herself, to get into agriculture, as there are opportunities for much growth and self-development in this sector.

WILKES-BARRE ? One block of West Market Street was closed to traffic for several hours on Wednesday as an independent film crew shot scenes for the upcoming film “Trust Me”.Co-writer and film director Chris Fetchko of West Hazleton says the Citizens Bank Building on West Market Street made the perfect backdrop.“Ninety-nine percent of the movie takes place in Wilkes-Barre,Cheap MLB Jerseys China, but we needed to film a New York City scene,Wholesale Authentic Jerseys,” said Fetchko. “Its cheaper to do it here,NFL Jerseys China, than take all these people into New York.”Fetchko said the film focuses on a man who gives up his business career in Manhattan to move back to Wilkes-Barre to help his favorite rock band. A handful of people volunteered to be extras in the film, and Wilkes-Barre police closed West Market Street to traffic for several hours. The lobby of the Citizens Bank Building remains empty after the bank branch left, but there are offices in the upper floors and luxury apartments are also being built. “We thought this looks good. It has the revolving doors on the front. It sets back a little bit,” said Production Designer Chuck Yarmey. “Keeping all the shots tight, we think it’s perfect for New York City.”Kevin Bartuski told Newswatch 16 that he did not realize that he walked through a movie set while they were filming, but he thinks some “movie magic” will help the corner look like Manhattan on the big screen. "They`re going to get creative, they have to in order to make it work,China Jerseys Wholesale,” said Bartuski.Other people who were watching the activity said they had their doubts about the setting. “As for it looking like New York City, they`re going to have a bit of a hard time,Cheap Air Max 90 Free Shipping,” said Bryan Pienta. “I mean some of the buildings look like they`d be in New York,Nike Air Max Valkoinen, but some of the stuff over here, I don`t think it would work.”The crew said they’re nearly done filming in Wilkes-Barre, and they plan on submitting “Trust Me” at the Sundance Film Festival this fall in hopes that a distributor will pick it up.
